Customer Critiques

UPDATE five/five/2010: This unit is nonetheless operating as effectively and proficiently as ever. We are fairly, particularly pleased with our obtain.
---------------
About a month and a half ago, my husband and I purchased this at our nearby Costco (because of great pricing and their good return policy) after researching and reading mixed internet reviews on A lot of, Quite a few portable air conditioners. He's in the Navy, so we're presently living in Port Hueneme, CA (Southern CA close to L.A.) suitable on the ocean and the humidity is quite high. We've utilised it on days with temperatures ranging from ~78 to 86F and are nonetheless waiting for a certainly hot day to hit. It might possibly not occur this year, but it absolutely did last year. We use it in our upstairs bedroom--around 180 square feet--with the door shut to maintain our cats out.
The results:
Noise: Fantastic. We utilised to have a single fan blowing on complete-speed in there. While you CAN hear this unit, it is quieter than the fan was, by likely 50%. As another reviewer noted, you can hear a small water trickling from time to time, but that does not seriously bother us, and it is definitely not constant. We sleep like babies with this unit about a foot away from the bed.
Cooling: Again, leading-notch. I seriously wasn't expecting a lot from a portable after reading so quite a few negative critiques for all of the portable air conditioners we researched. On the day that we installed it, it was 83F outside (and quite possibly close to 90F in our bedroom) and, being pessimistic in our expectations, we place it on the MegaCool setting and left the bedroom, closing the door behind us. About 2 hours later, we headed up the stairs to check on it. About halfway up the stairs, we could feel that the air was cooler than it had been downstairs. In fact, the entire top floor of our townhouse (around 500 square feet) was noticeably cooler, even with the bedroom door closed. When we opened the bedroom door, it had currently dropped a very good 10 to 15 degrees. We left it for a handful of more hours, and when we went back in it was so cold that we got the down comforter out to cuddle under as we slept. And sleep we did--far better than we had in ages. I think that 4 hours to go from 90F to what felt like close to 50F is really reasonable. Due to the fact then, we've kept it in between 67F and 70F.
Remote: Very user friendly. You can also cover the sensor on the remote with your hand and click the Power button to turn the remote off without turning the air conditioner off--this elongates the battery life.
Dehumidifying: It really is unbelievable how well this dehumidifies the air right here. Bear in mind, we live appropriate on the ocean, so it really is constantly particularly humid. I Appreciate that my sheets no longer feel soggy when I sleep, and that my husband and I can sleep touching with out sticking to every single other. And if this tells you anything, my hair is definitely wavy/curlyish, and when I sleep at night in the dehumidified bedroom, it gets pretty close to perfectly straight. As soon as I go down to the lower level of our townhouse, though, my hair right away begins curling. My husband tends to laugh at how immediately the curls form once I leave the bedroom. I by no means had this expertise with centralized AC when I lived in Texas. My point? It dehumidifies Really well.
Draining: We've done this twice in the last month and a half and probably could have gotten away with undertaking it as soon as. A lot of the water evaporates suitable out of the window, and the tank appears to have a decent capacity. The machine will also automatically shut itself off if the tank gets too complete. The technique is also fairly uncomplicated. The drain is far sufficient off the floor that you can use a bucket to empty the unit. One thing we noticed is that even even though it has an on/off valve, the off position does not seem to work. We have to make confident the stopper is in securely no matter what setting the valve is on.
Construction: Appears to be very sturdy, but not overly heavy. My husband had a broken arm and I was able to drag it from the car and up the stairs with minimal help from him. It was undoubtedly heavy, but it was doable (I am 6', average to above-typical strength for a woman, and not also concerned about breaking a nail, although). When out of the box, the casters are a real plus when moving it.
Installation: The installation instructions are a bit tedious and not perfectly written, but it is quite quick to figure out how to assemble most of the unit with out them if you have a decent amount of frequent sense. The installation is still not a bed of roses, but I don't think installing any other portable unit would be any much better. From my research, they all use comparable strategies, so I cannot truly complain about this unit. Just an FYI, though: this unit is developed for windows with solid wooden casements--the exhaust piece requirements to fit snugly against and screw into the casement. We had a slight problem with this mainly because we have windows that open horizontally rather than vertically, and the casement isn't flat or wooden--it is recessed and metal. We ended up getting to make a workaround--some measuring and a swift trip to the local lumber yard, and we had a couple of plywood inserts. One fills in the recessed casement and allowed us to screw the exhaust piece onto something solid, the other braces the sliding element of the window up against the unit. A bit of a pain, but not also negative nor as well ugly.
Other features: The adjustable louvers operate fairly well. We like to point them up at the ceiling whilst we sleep, giving great cool air and superb circulation without having freezing us out. The Plasmacluster functionality is good, but when it is on, the unit shows a very Vibrant blue light. We have difficulty sleeping with it on, so we turn it off at night. Just a head's up in case you want to run Plasmacluster at night--you might possibly have to have to find a way to cover the light up. [EDIT five/5/2010: We have considering the fact that discovered the nifty "Lights" button on the remote manage. This turns off the lights on the unit without having generating you turn off the Plasmacluster functionality, so no worries there any way more.]
All in all, we're both so glad we purchased this unit. We had been mulling more than whether the expense would be worth it so we waited and thought for a couple of months. We agree that we should really have just gone ahead and completed it MONTHS ago! The summer would have been significantly way more bearable, and we would have been significantly greater rested

Purchased this unit yesterday on a 90 degree day. The unit is super quiet as described. Just after employing this unit, I want to trash my other portable AC and only use this unit.
The functions are cool like auto on and off each and every 30 minutes or so. I especially like how you can adjust the direction of the air flow (vertically) from the remote control. One other good function (compared to my Amcor ALTL12000E) is that the air ducts are as wide as the unit. At 1st I did not realize has sweet this was, but now comparing it to my other unit which the air only comes out of a small section, the Sharp is the way to go.
I would extremely advise this unit for 400 and below rooms. I nearly froze last night in my bedroom and had to modify the auto on function to hour intervals, not 30 minute intervals. Ohh and by the way, soon after about 10 hours use in the past day, I have yet to want to drain any water.
