The vents in my residence are in some inefficient places, and these deflectors actually assist direct air where it really is necessary. The vertical vent on the wall in my upstairs hall blows really a bit of air, but the one in the master bedroom does not. So I put a deflector on the hall vent to direct the air towards the bedroom and it literally created a five or 6 degree difference in the bedroom, I have a thermometer in there to measure it.
These deflectors are not that sturdy or fancy, but they're produced in the USA, are fairly unobtrusive, and perform properly. They're just clear plastic about the thickness of a CD jewel box but I truly do not know what else would execute their function and look decent. If they get stepped on I don't assume they'll hold up properly, but they're only a few dollars every. Seriously, in "bang for the buck" these rate rather high.
Preserve in thoughts that when they come out of the box they are narrow and don't appear like they can get wider, but they will slide open to fit standard heat vents.
The "filter" that ships with the deflector doesn't appear like a lot, it is just a piece of plastic with a mesh pattern in it, and it's not apparent how to attach it to the deflector. I did not be concerned about it. I want maximum airflow out of each vent.
